party political broadcast

party political broadcast
(PPB)
Or party election broadcasts, PEBs. Three- to five-minute television slots in which the political parties present their messages to voters, without any intervention from television interviewers or presenters. At election time, PEBs are available only to those parties that have 50 or more candidates standing for election. They are allocated on the basis of performance in the previous election.
PPBs first appeared – in a very amateurish form – on British television in 1951. By the late 1970s they had become highly professional, as the idea that politicians could be packaged and marketed gained a foothold. Their length was reduced, the idea being that shorter broadcasts would be catchy and more memorable. Towards the end of the century, they were a medium in decline, no longer broadcast simultaneously on the terrestrial channels. Their purpose is still to rally core support and endeavour to persuade uncommitted or wavering voters. However, their impact has diminished and they are generally unloved and derided.
